The Best Concrete Products For Salt Storage Buildings

Choosing the right solution for salt storage can be difficult. Typically, salt barns need concrete walls that can easily retain the salt grit. Salt can be corrosive and needs to be sensitively stored, to protect the salt against environmental conditions. The key is to store the salt in a way that it does not form into lumps, nor should it form a heavy crusting.

Usually, once salt has been stored in a building, the grit is then covered by a steel framed building or a stretched canvas roof. In order to ensure that the building is robust and can protect the salt from environmental conditions, such as rain, wind and snow, the building will need precast concrete retaining walls of up to 3500mm in height. The salt storage building will also need a pitched or domed roof to give the best protection.

Here at JP Concrete we have many years’ experience in providing secure retaining walls for salt storage buildings. If you are looking to maximise your storage space and give the best possible protection, we recommend that you choose either prestressed concrete panels, precast retaining walls, freestanding retaining walls or interlocking concrete blocks.

Our team will happily talk you through the best concrete products for salt storage buildings, so please do get in touch if you have any questions.

All of our precast concrete products are designed to BS 8110-1:1997 and are manufactured with a standard cover to reinforcement of 30mm. Our products are also suitable for all levels of exposure, from mild to very severe.

Prestressed Concrete Panels

These panels are an excellent choice for a salt storage building. Our prestressed concrete panels can be installed either horizontally or vertically. If it’s the latter, then the panel can be cast into a concrete foundation slab. We can manufacture these panels to any required length; the longest length we supply is 6500mm.

We can supply the panels with the fixing bolts and plates and we can also provide lifting shackles which will help you to manoeuvre the panels into your salt storage building.  If you use prestressed concrete panels for your salt storage building then you can be sure that they will provide excellent support and protection.

Precast Retaining Walls

Another way of maximising storage space in a salt storage building is to install precast retaining walls. Typically, an average salt storage building will be constructed using an L-shaped retaining wall unit. This can be precast and installed using an existing concrete base or casting into a new concrete floor slab.

Because salt is a corrosive material, we will always advise that the cast-in walls do not have any exposed fixings. If you need the units to be bolted down, we can provide stainless steel fixings if required. The salt and grit can then be stored on either side of the wall and you can be sure that the salt will be protected against environmental conditions.

Freestanding Retaining Walls

If you are looking for more flexibility with your salt storage building, then freestanding retaining walls are a great solution. They can create temporary divides and, because the weight of the walls is sufficient to keep itself in place, they require no fixings or foundation work.

We can supply and manufacture various heights of walls depending on your requirements. We can also provide corner units if you want to create a bay within your salt storage building.

Concrete Lego Blocks

For temporary solutions in your salt storage building, we recommend that you use concrete Lego blocks as a fast and effective way of constructing dividing walls and temporary structures. We can supply these in any required size or you can choose from our standard-sized Lego blocks.

These blocks can be easily installed and can create division for your salt storage, giving it the ultimate protection from water, wind and other environmental threats.
