In November 2019, a devastating fire swept through the Claremont Hotel on Eastbourne seafront. The Grade II listed landmark, built in the 1850s, experienced a partial collapse, rendering the structure unstable and in urgent need of support.
To enable scaffolding to be safely erected around the building’s remains, a reliable ballast solution was required to withstand the strong coastal winds sweeping along the promenade. Maidstone Scaffolding turned to us to provide a quick, practical precast option that would maintain the structure’s stability and keep the project on track.

Project Background
The partial collapse of the hotel posed serious safety risks and made the site highly complex to manage.
With the seafront location exposed to strong winds and severe weather, scaffolding alone was not enough — it required substantial counterweights to stay stable during the reconstruction.
The solution needed to be delivered quickly, positioned accurately on a restricted site, and robust enough to withstand both the weather and the stresses of the scaffolding system.
Our Solution
Why Precast Ballast Blocks
We supplied and delivered 36 of our 1T precast ballast blocks, designed for use as counterweights in temporary works and scaffolding projects. Using our vehicle-mounted Moffett with a block grab, the blocks were off-loaded directly into position in just two vehicle loads.
