How to protect and store your grain throughout all four seasons

Storing grain is a complex issue for many owners of agricultural buildings. Weather conditions can greatly affect the quality or lifespan of grain, and storing it in the wrong conditions can be detrimental to its quality, not to mention a farm’s profits, too.

Creating the right storage facility for grain is absolutely key and, since we’re regularly asked by our customers what our recommendations are for grain storage, we’ve put together this short guide.

How should you construct a grain storage facility?

We believe that using concrete panels is, by far, the most effective product to use for grain storage. Concrete is not only cost effective, it is also robust and durable, meaning that you can rely on a concrete foundation and structure to stand the test of time.

However, since grain storage unit specifications can vary so wildly from site to site, flexibility and adaptability is also key. When our customers ask us which concrete panels to use for grain storage, we always recommend the use of freestanding retaining wall blocks.

What are freestanding retaining wall blocks?

Quick and easy to install, freestanding retaining wall blocks features fork pockets which allow you to create a robust structure. Furthermore, these wall blocks can also be used to create division within a storage unit which is particularly useful if you’re looking to store a variety of materials in addition to your grain, and you need to separate them.

Here at JP Concrete, our pre-stressed freestanding wall blocks are manufactured in a factory-controlled environment to ensure that they are strong, robust and durable.

How much do freestanding retaining walls cost?

Since each building project is completely unique and each one calls for its own bespoke requirements, it is difficult to say exactly how much freestanding retaining walls cost.

However, our policy at JP Concrete is to operate a competitive and affordable pricing structure for all of our concrete products. If you’d like a bespoke quote, just ask a member of our team who will be happy to talk this through with you in more detail and give you an idea on cost.

How are freestanding walls installed?

Freestanding retaining wall installation is fairly straightforward. The walls include a forklift recess on the base of the unit which means you can move them into place quickly and easily. You don’t need any specialist equipment to install the units and we can also supply corner units, as well as a variety of heights to choose from which give you greater flexibility.

Our freestanding wall panels have been designed to stand on their own. However, if your project calls for it, we can also supply a steel channel which allows you to tie the units together. In addition to this, if you’re looking for a more permanent solution, you can also fix the units down with bolts if required.

If you’re unsure about installation, or you’d rather outsource the installation of your storage facility, speak to a member of our team who will tell you about our bespoke installation service that we offer to all UK-based customers.

Our installation team includes experienced installation operatives as well as structural engineers who can discuss the construction of your storage facility with you to give you extra peace of mind.

How large are freestanding retaining walls?

All freestanding retaining walls come in a standard width of 1,200mm. However, if you’re looking for a degree of flexibility with the height of your grain storage facility, you can choose from a variety of panel heights. Our shortest units measure 1,500mm and 2,000mm and go up to 2,500mm, 3,000mm and 3,500mm, too.

If you’re looking to create a grain storage facility, using freestanding concrete retaining walls is a great place to start. Our team at JP Concrete has helped many customers design and build a bespoke storage facility and is on hand to offer advice and assistance.

If you’re unsure which size of panel to choose, or whether your building project requires more reinforcement using a steel channel or fixing bolts, just ask a member of our team who will be happy to give their recommendations.
