Heavy-Duty Cast-In Retaining Walls

Precast retaining walls engineered for strength, durability, and watertight performance

Why choose heavy-duty retaining walls?

Heavy-duty cast-ins are the upgrade when strength, durability, and watertight performance are essential.

  • Higher surcharge capacity – designed for up to 20 kN/m², suitable for dense materials and high-pressure applications.
  • Extended design life – up to 100 years of service, ideal for permanent infrastructure and long-term agricultural use.
  • Greater fire resistance – withstands up to 120 minutes of fire exposure, suitable for fire and blast wall applications.
  • Watertight joints – sealable with Hydrotite strips for slurry stores, silage clamps, or liquid containment.
  • Permanent slab connection – units are cast into the slab for a monolithic structure with no additional fixings.
  • Efficient handling – supplied in 1m sections with consistent 250mm thick toes and stems for stability and easy installation.
  • Trusted performance – made from C50 concrete, compliant with Eurocodes EN 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1997, and factory-controlled for quality.

Retaining walls designed for the toughest jobs

Some projects need more than standard retaining walls. If you’re storing slurry, building silage clamps, or designing fire and blast walls, you’ll need a wall built to withstand greater loads and last longer.

Heavy-duty cast-in retaining walls are suitable for applications needing higher surcharge capacity or longer design life. With continuous 250mm thick toes and stems, these units can handle surcharge capacities of up to 20 kN/m², achieve design lives of up to 100 years, and offer fire resistance of up to 120 minutes.

Installed in the same way as standard cast-in walls, reinforcement at the toe ties into the slab mesh before pouring. Once the slab is poured, no additional fixings are needed – the wall and floor form a single, permanent structure.

Product Features & Specifications of Heavy-Duty Retaining Walls

Heavy-duty cast-in retaining walls are built for projects that demand higher surcharges, extended design life, or fire resistance. Here’s how they deliver long-term strength.

Heights: 1.0m to 5m

Available in nine standard heights, supplied in 1m long sections. This flexibility lets you design walls that fit your project exactly, without overbuilding.

Corner units: 90° fixed corners

Two-part corner sections are available at every standard height, allowing crisp 90° corners for storage bays or L- and U-shaped layouts without bespoke detailing. Each corner integrates with the slab reinforcement, forming a continuous, permanent connection.

Material density: Up to 18 kN/m³

Suitable for storing and retaining dense materials such as slurry, silage, and bulk aggregates.

Surcharge capacity: Up to 20 kN/m²

Designed for medium-duty storage and retaining applications. Strong enough for aggregates, soils, and crops, making them a dependable choice for civils and commercial projects needing a permanent wall.

Concrete strength: C50 mix

High-quality concrete ensures durability and long-term strength, providing resistance to wear, cracking, and harsh environments.

Connection: Cast into a reinforced concrete slab

Each unit is manufactured with exposed reinforcement at the toe. Once tied into the slab reinforcement and poured into the new floor, the wall becomes part of the slab, forming a secure, monolithic structure.

Design life: 100 years

Heavy-duty cast-in walls are built for longevity, ideal for long-term agricultural, commercial, and infrastructure projects where durability matters.

Reinforcement cover: 30mm minimum

Additional cover can be specified to extend design life or increase fire resistance. This protects the steel from corrosion and ensures compliance with UK standards.

Fire resistance: 120 minutes

Provides added safety in fire and blast wall applications. Fire resistance varies depending on reinforcement cover and design life requirements.

Edge detail: Square edges

Units are manufactured with square edges for predictable alignment and joint spacing, giving you neat walls and easier sealing.

Finish: Smooth mould finish

The front face is mould-finished for a professional appearance, with a hand-trowelled back face for efficiency in production.

Foundation type: Reinforced concrete slab

Heavy-duty units must be cast into a new RC slab. Once poured, the wall is permanently tied into the floor with no further fixing required.

Wall Sizes, Dimensions & Product Range

Heavy-duty cast-in walls are supplied in 1m long sections, with nine standard heights from 1.0m to 5.0m. With constant 250mm thick toes and stems, these units offer reliable stability and greater capacity, while still being straightforward to handle and efficient to deliver.
