When Heathrow Airport needed a robust acoustic barrier to reduce noise pollution and improve operational efficiency, the installation had to meet strict engineering, security and logistical requirements. Working airside added an extra layer of complexity, with timed access, security protocols and minimal windows for construction activity.
The project involved installing a large acoustic barrier system designed to protect nearby areas from aircraft noise while supporting key airport operations. With sections of the wall set at an angle and connecting into vertical side walls, panel alignment had to be extremely accurate. This required detailed planning, strict sequencing, and coordinated access to ensure the installation stayed on schedule.

Project Background
Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world, and any construction project within an airside environment requires exceptional control and coordination. Security checks, timed escorting, and strict movement protocols required precise planning before a single panel could be lifted.
The barrier itself required a structural system capable of managing noise, thermal control, and impact resistance. With an angled back wall connecting to vertical side walls, precise positioning was essential. Each panel needed to be installed and secured without deviation to ensure long-term performance.
Our Solution
Why Prestressed Concrete Panels
We supplied 210 prestressed concrete panels, each measuring 3.6m by 1m by 150mm, forming a structure 14m high with a plan size of 90 m by 70m. The panels were lifted into place and mounted onto a steel frame system using bolts and cleats at the rear.
All horizontal and vertical joints were sealed to form a complete acoustic and heat-resistant barrier, ensuring the system met both performance and safety standards.
