Precast Box Culverts
Precast box culverts are manufactured to order, to the specific design required for a project. They have a smooth mould finish, which allows water to flow freely through the channel. The units interlock to ensure perfect alignment and are easily sealed.
Delivery & Installation Options
We deliver on an articulated vehicle, for you to offload with your machinery.
We deliver, offload and place the units for you – using a crane vehicle or moffett (truck mounted forklift).
We provide you with a full turn-key solution; design, supply & installation (including associated groundworks).
Precast box culverts can be used for a variety of applications including:
- Storm and Foul Sewers
- Diverting watercourse
- Sea Outfalls
- Tunnels and Subways
- Open Channels
- Attenuation Tanks
- Pedestrian and vehicle subways
- Service tunnels and ducts
- Cattle Underpasses
All precast box culverts are manufactured to order, to the specific design required for a project. The loadings from outside the concrete culvert will dictate the thicknesses of the walls and the amount of reinforcement required.
The concrete culverts are manufactured with a smooth mould finish, which allows water to flow freely through the channel. The units interlock to ensure perfect alignment and are easily sealed. Installation of the precast units is exceptionally fast, they are placed directly onto a prepared foundation, no additional fixing is required.
The type of foundation will depend on the ground bearing capacity and any loads that may be applied to the channel from plant or vehicles. When designing the foundation for liquids, a gradient should be included to allow it to flow along the channel. Internal joints can be sealed with mastic to achieve a watertight seal between units.
Wall units are manufactured under factory control, have been designed to relevant British (BS) standards, including BS EN 14844 and are CE marked.
The load criteria should be specified by the project engineer and should include, the following information:
- Internal span
- Internal height
- Depth of earth backfill over the box culvert
- Culvert usage & additional surcharges
The exposure conditions and any known design codes should also be provided if available. And any bespoke features such as inlet and outlet points, access holes and end/headwalls.
Below is a table outlining the characteristics of the concrete box culverts. Here you can find information on concrete strength and connection type. If you require any further information please get in touch and one of the team will be happy to help.
Box culverts are available in a wide range of sizes. As they are made to order, you can specify the box culvert dimensions. The culvert widths can be from 1000mm to 6000mm and internal heights from 500mm to 3600mm. Culvert sections lengths are typically between 1000mm to 2000mm - this will change depending on the size and weight of the units.
Joints are a standard spigot & socket interlocking detail and the box culverts can be jointed using a rubber sealant strip or can be sealed with mastic if required.
The precast concrete culverts can be manufactured and customised with the following additional features:
Mammal Ledges - Mammal ledges precast in the bottom of the culvert to allow wildlife to move freely and safely, avoiding and water.
Flow Channels - Half-round channels can be cast into the bottom of the units at any position with a choice of sizes.
Twin Box - Side-by-side box culverts and be used to separate water from a dry passageway.
V-Channel - The bottom for the culvert can be cast in a V to improve the flow rate and making the culvert easier to maintain and keep clean.
Wing Walls & Head Walls - At the openings of the box culverts, we can also supply precast headwalls and wing walls. These can be made to suit the opening size of the culverts.
Open culvert + Cover slab - We can also manufacture three-sided open culverts with removable precast covers. This type of culvert can be used for cable channels or for situations when you may need to get into the culvert regularly for maintenance.
The lifting & fixing systems of our precast products have been designed for; speed of installation, ease of use and with the safety of the installer in mind.
Spherical Head Lifting Clutches - Number and size of clutches with depend on the size and weight of each culvert section.
Offload & Handling
No additional fixings required

Q. How much are box culverts?
A. It’s difficult to be able to give specific costs for precast box culverts as no two construction projects are the same. Once the project engineer or design team have specified the requirements, our team can price the units for you.
Q. What are the different types of culverts?
A. There are five main types of culverts:
- Pipe Culvert
- Arch Culvert
- Box Culvert
- Open Culvert
- Bridge Culvert
Q. What is the design life of a box culvert?
A. Box culverts can be designed to have a service life of up to 120-years. It is important that as much information is included in the engineers or customer specification so that the correct cover to reinforcement etc can be included in the final culvert design.
