Silage Storage
Silage must be firmly packed when it is stored - this is to minimize the oxygen content, or it will spoil. There are several major stages silage goes through in a silo:
Presealing - following the first few days after filling a silo, this enables some respiration and some dry matter (DM) loss, but stops fermentation.
Fermentation - this occurs over a few weeks; the pH drops; there is more DM loss, but hemicelluous is broken down; aerobic respiration stops.
Infiltration, which enables some oxygen infiltration, allowing for limited microbial respiration; available carbohydrates (CHOs) are lost as heat and gas.
Emtying - this exposes the surface causing additional loss; the rate of loss increases.
JP Concrete can supply a number of products for constructing silage clamps. Our pre-stressed concrete panels can be used either horizintally or vertically. Alternatively our precast concrete retaining wall units be used. For more information on our silage clamps please call one of the sales team.
