Grain can be stored in purpose built grain storage buildings, or in silos. The idea of both systems is to ensure that the grain stays fresh until it is ready for market. The process generally involves the grain initially being cleaned; any debris of foreign articles are removed,and then the grain is processed into the storage area. Once in the grain building or silo, the grain is dried and constantly aerated. Keeping the grain dry, free from mould, insects, rats, birds and other foreign invasions is imperative, and will come down to how well the building has been constructed and how well maintained it is. Additionally the farmer needs to ensure constant monitoring of the grain so that any issues are picked up and dealt with immediately.
Grain storage buildings are designed to keep grain in peak condition while it is being stored, up until the point it goes to market. When construdting and operating grain stores farmers need to be aware of a number of factors and it is advisable to get an experience firm in to advise. It is not only important that the building and infrastructure is constructed correctly; it is just as important that right operating procedures are adhered to. If these two things are combined then the result should be that grain can be stored for long periods with little or no impact on quality.
